Salakos village at Mount Profitis Ilias, Rhodes island A winding road take you to village of Salakos, half the way between Kalavarda and Embonas. The fresh water from the local spring, called Nymph, makes its presence felt in the density of the greenery and is also the main source of the water supply for Rhodes town. Salakos is perched on the side of Profitis Ilias and is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. The multicolored houses are built in traditional style and are decorated with boxes filled with all kind of flowers. The area is full of fresh smelling pine trees and fields full of flowers. A strong smell of herbs from the Vassilico (basil) plant lingered in the air. At the square, built from the Italians, you can watch the men sitting in the shade of trees sipping their ouzo, discuss the politics of the day, or playing backgammon (tavli) over a cup of strong, thick, black coffee.
